OPT to H-1B Transition Overview

Transitioning from OPT (Optional Practical Training) to H-1B is the most common path for international students. Here's everything you need to know.

Step 1: Employer Registration (March)

Your employer must register you in the H-1B lottery during the registration period in March.

Step 2: Lottery Selection (March-April)

USCIS conducts a random lottery. If selected, your employer has 90 days to file the H-1B petition.

Step 3: Filing and Processing (April-October)

Once the petition is filed, processing takes several months. Premium processing can reduce this to 15 days.

Cap Gap Extension

If your OPT expires before October 1, you may be eligible for a cap gap extension, allowing you to:

• Continue working legally
• Maintain F-1 status
• Stay in the U.S. until October 1

If not selected in the lottery:
