What are OPT and CPT?

OPT (Optional Practical Training) and CPT (Curricular Practical Training) are work authorization programs for F-1 international students in the United States. They allow you to gain practical work experience in your field of study.

CPT (Curricular Practical Training)

**What is CPT?**

CPT is work authorization that must be directly related to your major and is an integral part of your curriculum. It can be used for internships, cooperative education programs, or any required practicum.

**Eligibility**

• Must be an F-1 student in good standing
• Must have completed one full academic year (9 months)
• The work must be directly related to your field of study
• Must receive credit or be a required part of the curriculum

**Types of CPT**

• **Part-time CPT**: Work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session
• **Full-time CPT**: Work more than 20 hours per week (only during official school breaks or if required by the program)

**Important Notes**

• There is no limit on the duration of part-time CPT
• If you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT
• You must get CPT authorization before starting work

OPT (Optional Practical Training)

OPT is temporary employment authorization that allows F-1 students to work in their field of study for up to 12 months. STEM degree holders may be eligible for a 24-month extension.

**Types of OPT**

• **Pre-completion OPT**: Before completing your degree (part-time while school is in session)
• **Post-completion OPT**: After completing your degree (can be full-time)
• **STEM OPT Extension**: Additional 24 months for STEM degree holders

**Eligibility**

• Must be an F-1 student who has been enrolled full-time for at least one academic year
• Must not have used 12 months or more of full-time CPT
• The employment must be directly related to your major

**Application Timeline for Post-Completion OPT**

• Apply up to 90 days before your program end date
• Apply no later than 60 days after your program end date
• USCIS processing time: 2-5 months

STEM OPT Extension

For students with degrees in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics):

• Additional 24 months of work authorization
• Total possible OPT time: 36 months
• Must work for an E-Verify employer
• Must submit a formal training plan
• Must report changes to the DSO within 10 days

Tips for Success

1. Apply for OPT as early as possible (up to 90 days before graduation)

2. Keep detailed records of all employment

3. Report any changes to your Designated School Official (DSO)

4. Don't travel while your OPT application is pending

5. Maintain a valid F-1 status throughout the process

6. For STEM OPT, ensure your employer is enrolled in E-Verify
