STEM OPT Extension: Everything You Need to Know

The STEM OPT extension is one of the most valuable work authorization benefits for international students in the United States. It provides an additional 24 months of work authorization on top of the standard 12-month OPT, giving STEM graduates a total of 36 months to work in the US.

What is STEM OPT?

The STEM OPT extension allows F-1 students who have completed a degree in a designated STEM field to extend their post-completion OPT by 24 months. This gives you up to 3 years of work authorization without needing an H-1B visa.

Eligible STEM Fields

The DHS maintains a list of eligible STEM fields, which includes:

• Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)

Requirements

1. Current employment in a STEM-related role

2. Employer must be enrolled in E-Verify

3. Must submit a formal Training Plan (Form I-983)

4. Cannot have used more than 90 days of unemployment during initial OPT

5. Must apply before your initial OPT expires

Application Timeline

• Apply up to 90 days before your initial OPT expires
• USCIS processing: 2-5 months
• You can continue working for 180 days while your application is pending (if filed on time)
• Must receive approval before the 180-day period expires

Reporting Requirements

STEM OPT students have additional reporting obligations:

• Must report to DSO within 10 days of any change
• Report: employer name and address, job duties, work hours, salary
• Submit annual evaluations to DSO
• Complete a final evaluation at the end of the extension
